Council Acts to Address State Audit Findings
The Council and Executive recently received a report from the Washington State Auditor highlighting 12 areas where the Auditor believes the County can improve its safeguards over construction management and the management of cash and assets. The audit tells us that we can do a better job of ensuring accountability of public tax dollars.
In response, I introduced legislation with Councilmember Reagan Dunn to strengthen Council oversight of major construction projects. In our proposed legislation, funds for capital construction projects deemed to be of higher risk would be released in phases, and countywide standards for reporting on capital projects would be established.
In addition, we are calling for the County agencies whose management of cash or assets caught the attention of the Auditor to report to the Council on the procedures they have implemented to address those concerns. These include the handling of cash fares collected on Metro Transit buses, and inventorying of prescription drugs at Public Health and ammunition at the Sheriff’s office.
Kayu Kayu Ac Park Dedication in Shoreline
Last month, I had the privilege of attending the dedication of a new park in Shoreline’s Richmond Beach Neighborhood. The park is located on the southern-most two acres of a King County pump-station site. As part of an agreement between the county and city, Brightwater mitigation funds were used in the development of the site. The new park’s name, Kayu Kayu Ac, was chosen in honor of the Duwamish tribe's name for the area.
King County is developing a Countywide Strategic Plan to shape the vision and direction for the future of the County. As part of the strategic planning process, King County will be collecting residents’ thoughts and opinions this summer via surveys and workshops. I encourage you to participate. Please read more for details about the Strategic Plan and scheduled workshops.
