I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to our veterans. My father, uncles and grandfathers were veterans, and through them I learned about the Normandy Invasion, the sinking of the Quincy and Patton’s Army. Their stories made my high school history books come alive. Because of those connections, I know on both a personal and public policy level that veterans deserve our support.

Many King County families have similar connections and understand that veterans ought to have our support. In 2005, voters in King County approved the Veterans and Human Services Levy. Serving King County's 150,000 veterans, these tax dollars increase access to post-traumatic stress disorder counseling, employment opportunities and benefits, while reducing homelessness and recidivism rates among veterans.

In observance of Veterans Day, I recently sent out a special Veterans Day newsletter that provides updates about how the levy is helping local veterans. Many constituents have called or emailed to thank me for the newsletter, and they have shared their own stories about why they feel it is important to support veterans. If you did not receive the newsletter, I want to take this opportunity to share it with you.

Again, thank you to all our veterans. Have a wonderful Veterans Day, and I will be in touch next month to update you on the 2009 budget.
