King County's plan to move to all mail voting: What you need to know to plan for voting by mail:
!

  1. When will King County switch to all mail voting?
King County will shift to an entirely vote by mail system once the infrastructure and management are in place, in a spring special election in 2009. Thirty-seven of Washington’s 39 counties already conduct their elections entirely by mail.

  2. I vote at the polls, how will an all vote by mail system affect me?
You will continue to vote at the polls this year and until you are notified by mail of any changes, sometime in 2008 or 2009. With the transition to vote by mail, 12 regional voting centers will replace the 407 polling places throughout the county.

  3. What is vote by mail?
In a vote by mail elections environment, ballots are conveniently mailed to voters three weeks before each election they are eligible to vote in. Absentee, or mail, ballots must be postmarked by Election Day or dropped off at one of King County’s official drop-off locations. Currently, 70 to 80 percent of ballots cast in any given election are cast by mail and 62 percent of King County voters are registered as permanent absentee voters.

  4. Why is King County planning to switch to all mail voting?
With so many people choosing to vote by mail, King County conducts essentially two separate elections at once- one by mail and the other at the polls. Several third-party reviews of King County Elections recommend streamlining the election process to a single, common voting system: voting by mail. This will reduce the complexity of conducting elections and will allow resources to be focused on the voting method that the majority of voters prefer.

  5. I am already an absentee voter, how will all mail voting affect me?
If you are one of the more than 638,000 King County residents who already votes by mail, this transition will not affect the way you vote. You will receive your ballot the way you are accustomed, with the added option of dropping off your ballot at a regional voting center or a secured ballot drop box.

    !
  6. Can someone find out how I voted?
No. The choices you make on your ballot are kept separate from your identity by a security envelope. After your signature is matched to your voter registration information, the sealed signature envelope with your voter information is opened and the ballot and security envelope are removed. The security envelope is separated after it is removed from the signature envelope, severing the connection between your name and your vote.

    !
  7. What can I do now to prepare for the transition to all mail voting?
King County Elections encourages current poll voters to update their mail addresses and signatures on their voter registrations. This information is very important and must be kept current to ensure your ballot is properly mailed and counted. Download a new registration form on our Web site to update your signature and address.
