![]() Feb. 19, 2008 King County poll workers end lonely day at the pollsElection results expected to trickle in until 1:30 a.m.Election Day started at 7 a.m. this morning when 407 polling places opened their doors to voters and absentee ballots were run through the vote-counting equipment at election headquarters in Renton. Election officials will work through the night to post results arriving from throughout King County. Anecdotal reports from poll workers in the field suggest lower than expected turnout. "This primary and the unique procedures generated strong and sometimes passionate feelings for our voters," said Sherril Huff, King County Elections' director. "Voters wanted their voice heard. We have received a high volume of calls in our phone bank and have seen opinions on ballots, envelopes and sometimes in creative 'love notes'. We will see large volumes of ballots returned in the mail over the next two days and fully expect to reach or exceed our forecasted turnout of 42 percent." Initial results from the 154,000 absentee ballots counted today were posted at 8:15 p.m. These results included all Democratic and Republican ballots available for tabulation on Election Day. Results posted tomorrow will include a large number of "no party," or ballots returned in which the voter did not select a party oath either out of protest or because they did not follow the instructions.
