King County Elections certifies primary and prepares for recount
King County Elections this afternoon certified the 2006 primary, counting 342,195 ballots, which represents a 36 percent overall turnout. Certified results are now available online.
There will be a manual recount in the Northeast District Court race between second and third place candidates Mary Anne Ottinger and Frank V. LaSalata. The area spans 1170 miles from Bothell to Newcastle and east to North Bend. Also included in the district are 17 precincts located in Snohomish County. Those ballots will be manually recounted and added to the final results.
"The recount also underscores the challenges of certifying an election in the short time allowed and conducting the General Election such a short time after the primary," said Jim Buck, interim director of King County Records, Elections and Licensing Services. "As we are seeing now, the extra time needed for the recount will mean the turnaround for finalizing the General Election ballot in time to make print deadlines will be less than 24-hours."
The schedule for the recount is still being determined by the County Canvassing Board.
