King County recount results posted
Results of King County’s five-day machine recount in the 2004 Governor’s
race are available online at www.kingcounty.gov/elections.
King County’s recount added 336 more ballots to its results. In
the machine recount of the Governor’s race, Christine Gregoire gained
593 votes, Dino Rossi gained 348 votes, and Ruth Bennett gained 30 votes.
“Proportionately the results in King County are consistent with
results of the original count” said Dean Logan, director of King
County Records, Elections and Licensing Services.
King County Elections also completed a hand recount on Fire District
51 Proposition 1 authorizing a property tax levy. The fire district levy
includes precincts in Kittitas County and two precincts in King County.
Results of that hand recount returned the same results with 42 ballots
counted and 63.41 percent of the votes cast in King County for the tax
levy.
“Our team of 130 dedicated employees recounted a record 898,574
ballots in just five days,” said Dean Logan, director of King County
Records, Elections and Licensing Services. “Staff performed extraordinarily
well under intense scrutiny to ensure every ballot was counted fairly
and without influence from the public, candidates, or political parties.”
Election officials have plans in place should either candidate request
a hand-recount of the Governor’s race. Candidates have three days
after the Secretary of State certifies the recount to request a hand recount.
Logan expects a hand recount in King County would involve more than 300
employees and take at least two weeks.
Members of the King County Canvassing Board will certify results of the
fire district and governor’s race recount today at 3:00 p.m. in
the Lydia and Catherine Rooms in the King County Administration Building.
