Engage with King County

Join your neighbors, meet your County representatives at a town hall and open house
There has been record turnout at the 2016 Unincorporated Community Service Area (CSA) town hall and open houses in unincorporated King County. The open houses bring together the local County Councilmember and representatives from the Executive, Sheriff and numerous other County departments to meet with local residents and discuss issues affecting local communities. All meetings, except Vashon, will run from 7-9 p.m. For more information, including locations, please visit the website.

Community conversation on heroin and opiate addiction
Opiate overdose now claims more lives in American than traffic accidents. King County has seen heroin and prescription opiate addiction sharply increase. King County, Seattle, Auburn and Renton have jointly convened a task force to find solutions – and they want to hear from you. Share your thoughts on health and treatment services in King County on May 31, from 6:15 – 8:45 p.m. at the Renton Community Center, 1715 SE Maple Valley Highway in Renton. King County transit through 2040
King County Metro invites you to explore METRO CONNECTS, our draft plan for the future of King County transit through 2040. METRO CONNECTS describes a vision for a system of transportation choices that move people farther, faster and more reliably to the places they want to go, with ease, comfort and safety. The draft plan was developed based on more than a year of input from riders, community members, and cities and your input will help shape the final plan. Take the online survey, available through June 1, to tell us what you think.

King County hosts two meetings about using large wood in river projects
Learn about King County projects that involve placing large wood in rivers or streams including information on five upcoming projects and a review of four completed projects that used large wood. Two meetings offering the same information are set for June 8, from 3 - 5 p.m. and again at 6 - 8 p.m. at the Mercer Island Community Center, 8236 SE 24th St. Mercer Island. How can King County improve our human services delivery in rural communities?
King County Department of Community and Human Services is hosting three community meetings in June to gather input from residents and service providers on the most effective models of service delivery to the residents of rural communities. Make your voice heard! Meetings will take place in North Bend on June 17, Enumclaw on June 22, and Seattle, date to be announced. Visit the website for more information and updates.

ALERT King County – register to receive emergency alerts
King County Emergency Management recently upgraded its regional public information and notification system. Subscribers will now receive emergency, life safety, and other important messages by telephone, text, and email that are geographically-specific for where they live, work, and play. This service is free to residents and you can update your profile anytime. Register for ALERT King County today!

Senior property tax exemption
Do you know someone over the age of 61 who makes less than $40,000 per year? If so, they may qualify for a senior property tax exemption. Call the King County Assessor’s Office at 206-296-3920.

Catching and eating fresh fish
With summertime approaching, many of us are looking forward to fishing area lakes and Puget Sound. Some fish are safer to eat than others. Check out the Public Health Insider blog post to learn where to fish, and what to fish for, throughout King County.

King County Parks Play Area Rehabilitation Program update
The playground at Ravensdale Park closed on April 4 for rehabilitation. Due to a delay with the equipment delivery from the manufacturer, it is now estimated to remain closed until late July. The playground at Tolt-MacDonald Park will close for rehabilitation starting in mid-July after the Timber! Outdoor Music Festival, and is expected to remain closed through September. These renovations are part of the King County Parks levy funded Play Area Rehabilitation Program. Follow the Parks Plog for construction updates.

Last chance to register for the Big Backyard 5K
The seventh-annual Big Backyard 5K is happening on Sunday, June 5 at Marymoor Park. This run/walk is an event for the whole family, and is dog and stroller friendly. All participants will receive t-shirts, refreshments, snacks, prizes and the satisfaction of supporting King County Parks! The chip-timed course winds around the magnificent, and flat, Marymoor Park, so it’s perfect for a personal record.

Marymoor Park concert series
King County Parks is gearing up for a jam-packed summer full of Marymoor Park Concerts beginning on June 3 with The Lumineers. Tickets for artists such as Flight of the Conchords, Slightly Stoopid, Barenaked Ladies, Weezer and Panic! at the Disco are already on sale, with more shows to be announced.

Movies at Marymoor summer lineup
The 2016 summer lineup at the popular First Tech Movies@Marymoor outdoor cinema series is sure to draw families, film buffs and outdoor enthusiasts to King County’s Marymoor Park. The 2016 series is presented by Overlake Medical Clinics and kicks-off on July 6 with “Back to the Future.” The movie series runs through August.

Presidential Primary
The election deadline is Tuesday, May 24. For this election only, political parties require voters to pick a party in order to participate. Remember to mark a party declaration on the envelope and sign it, then choose a candidate from the corresponding party and mark it on the ballot. Ballots mailed must be postmarked no later than May 24, or deposited in a drop box by 8 p.m. on May 24. Visit the website for more information and a list of dropbox locations.

Road Services installing energy-saving LED lighting
Expect to see new lighting as you drive along roads in unincorporated King County. King County Road Services is replacing 676 street lights with LED lighting.  

Asthma can be controlled

Bear Creek/Sammamish Area

Cottage Lake basketball courts
Construction work on the Cottage Lake basketball courts began  May 16. The project includes perimeter fence replacement, drainage improvements, installation of an acrylic colored playing surface and brand new sports equipment. Construction is expected to be completed by June 24, weather permitting.

Music in the Park
Are you ready for summer?  Plan on attending this year's Music in the Park concert series, sponsored by the Upper Bear Creek Community Council. Concerts take place at Cottage Lake Park, 18831 NE Woodinville Duvall Rd. in Woodinville, on Thursday evenings, starting July 7.

Four Creeks/Tiger Mountain Area

Safety enhancements near Poo Poo Point
King County Road Services has installed curbing along Issaquah-Hobart Road Southeast near the paragliding landing field and parking lot. The purpose of the curbing is to prevent illegal parking which will enhance visibility for drivers passing by.

King County Comprehensive Plan update
The GMVUAC submitted transportation-related comments to the King County Council’s TrEE Committee on the Executive’s proposed update. Comments included the need for countywide “road networks” (which know no jurisdictional boundaries), as well as a better funding mechanism to help address unincorporated area road funding; the need for enforcement of transportation concurrency and better collaboration between jurisdictions; and elimination of the use of Transfer of Development Rights to satisfy transportation concurrency anywhere within the rural area. Additional comments dealing with economic development, growth management, and the environment will be submitted in June and July.

Snoqualmie Valley/Northeast King County Area

West Snoqualmie Valley Road NE construction underway
King County Road Services crews are reconstructing a portion of West Snoqualmie Valley Road Northeast and upgrading the drainage system. The roadway between Northeast 80th Street and Ames Lake Carnation Road Northeast will be closed until mid-November.

No Parking Signs
The good weather has inspired a large number of hikers to visit the Mt. Si Trail at SE Mount Si Road. The high volume of visitors has created an overflow parking issue that restricts access to the parking areas, and illegally parked vehicles on the roadway shoulders that encroach into the driving lanes. Road Services crews have installed 10 additional “No Parking/Tow Away” signs and placed a variable message board at SE Mount Si Road and SE 128th Place to warn trail users that illegally parked vehicles will be towed by the King County Sheriff’s Office.

North Highline Unincorporated Area Council meeting

West Hill Community Association Board meeting
