February 2010

Dear Neighbor,

With so much that’s already happened this year, it’s hard to believe it’s only February!

In this e-newsletter, I’ve shared how I will continue to serve you on the King County Council in 2010. This includes a recent trip I took to the “other Washington” to gain national support for programs that impact the citizens of King County. I’ve also highlighted some great events in South King County that I encourage you to check out.

Sincerely,
Signature
Julia Patterson, King County Councilmember - District 5

2010 at the Council

In January I was sworn in for my third term on the King County Council. I am honored to have another opportunity to serve the communities of Tukwila, Kent, Des Moines, SeaTac, and parts of Renton.

In 2010, I am committed to balancing the County’s budget while preserving critical services, working to secure state and federal funding to protect the Green River Valley from a potential flood, improving ways for people to travel to work and play, and keeping our communities healthy.

This year, I am serving as Chair of the Budget and Fiscal Management Committee, the Board of Health, and the King County Flood Control District.  I also serve on the committees that oversee regional transit and environment and transportation policy.

King County Council Travels to DC

On January 26, my Council colleagues and I traveled to Washington D.C. and met with members of our federal delegation to discuss issues important to King County. This annual trip is a prime opportunity for the County to remain competitive in the federal funding process, as well as to gain national support of the initiatives we implement locally. Among the many topics on this year’s federal agenda are the Howard Hanson Dam, flood control, housing, public safety, public health and transportation and transit services. The overall response from our Senate and Congressional leaders was very positive and I look forward to seeing many of our discussions materialize as we work closely with our federal government in the future.

Van Donations

Over the past few weeks, I delivered a retired King County Metro 8-passenger van to three South King County non-profit organizations: Somali Youth & Family Club in Skyway, SeaMar Community Health Center in Des Moines, and Jewish Family Services in Kent. Since 1995, the King County Council has donated vans to non-profit agencies to help meet the transportation needs of low-income, elderly or disabled residents. The vans are part of a fleet of county vehicles that have been ‘retired’ after accruing a certain number of miles.
