How it Works

Five Program Steps

  1. School administrators or custodians (at the school or district level) request assistance.

  2. King County conducts a walk-through (PDF, 37 K) with the school's custodian or other representative to assess the school's current recycling and waste reduction practices.

  3. King County then provides written recommendations (PDF, 35 K) on how the school can increase its recycling rate, decrease its garbage volume and possibly save money.

  4. King County works with the school to determine what changes should be made and then helps the school make improvements. Follow-up assistance may include:
    • Working with custodians and with garbage and recycling haulers.
    • Educating students and staff on how to participate in the school's recycling program and decrease solid waste.
    • Providing recycling containers (PDF, 584 K) and signage.
    • Providing information about recycled-content paper and other products, as well as other environmentally preferable products.

  5. King County helps the school measure success by assessing changes in recycling volumes and rates, garbage volumes and disposal costs.
