How it Works
Five Program Steps
- School administrators or custodians (at the school or district level) request assistance.
- King County conducts a walk-through (PDF, 37 K) with the school's custodian or other representative to assess the school's current recycling and waste reduction practices.
- King County then provides written recommendations (PDF, 35 K) on how the school can increase its recycling rate, decrease its garbage volume and possibly save money.
- King County works with the school to determine what changes should be made and then helps the school make improvements. Follow-up assistance may include:
- Working with custodians and with garbage and recycling haulers.
- Educating students and staff on how to participate in the school's recycling program and decrease solid waste.
- Providing recycling containers (PDF, 584 K) and signage.
- Providing information about recycled-content paper and other products, as well as other environmentally preferable products.
- King County helps the school measure success by assessing changes in recycling volumes and rates, garbage volumes and disposal costs.
