1. What is the MRC training?

King County's Master Recycler Composter (MRC) training is a six-week course that trains volunteers to educate others about waste reduction, recycling, composting and household hazardous waste. The next training is tentatively planned for early 2011. Training topics include waste prevention and reduction, yard and food waste composting, natural lawn care, household hazardous waste and green gardening. Saturday field trips include hands-on activities and tours of the regional landfill, solid waste transfer stations and local recycling facilities. After the training is completed, periodic continuing education opportunities are scheduled to keep MRC volunteers informed of new developments. MRCs also receive a quarterly volunteer newsletter (PDF) that contains articles on waste reduction, recycling and composting and lists available outreach activities and presentations for sign-up.

2. How much does it cost?

There is no monetary fee for MRC training. In exchange for training, MRCs agree to share their knowledge and skills by volunteering for 40 hours of community outreach, which can involve giving school presentations, staffing booths at community events and answering composting questions at nurseries. MRCs can also create their own outreach activities.

3. How do I sign up?

If you are a King County resident outside of Seattle, you are eligible to join the MRC program. An MRC application (PDF, 69 K) is required for this training. Applications are accepted throughout the year. Seattle residents are eligible for the Seattle Master Composter/Natural Soil Builder Program. For additional information on the Seattle program, contact the program's volunteer coordinator at 206-633-0097 or the Natural Lawn and Garden Hotline at 206-633-0097 or info@lawnandgardenhotline.org .
