Toolkit: Using HMA with RAS in Pavements
The following resources are provided for agencies that want to use recycled asphalt shingles (RAS) in hot mix asphalt (HMA) paving projects.
- RAS business case (PDF, 1 MB) – describes how using recycled asphalt shingles in paving can reduce waste, save money, and green road paving projects; and lists available technical assistance and resources
- 2012 RAS Specification Guidelines (PDF, 1.2 MB) – provides the latest iteration of procedures and standards for producing RAS for HMA paving applications, and is the third revision to the RAS Specification used in King County’s 2009 Paving Demonstration
- 2009 Paving Demonstration Special Provisions (PDF, 2.4 MB) – used by King County for its 2009 Paving Demonstration contract, and includes HMA specifications (Sections 5-04, 5-06) as well as RAS Specifications (Section 9-24)
- 2009 Paving Demonstration post-construction pavement conditions report (PDF, 540 K) and test section layout (PDF, 200 K) – second year pavement performance report for King County’s 2009 Paving Demonstration (2011), indicating that the use of RAS had no impact on pavement performance.
- List of shingles recyclers and HMA producers (PDF, 325 K) – contacts for shingles recyclers and HMA producers with experience using RAS in the Puget Sound area
- List of engineering contacts (PDF, 262 K) – contact information for technical experts who have been involved in specification development and research related to the use of RAS in HMA
- Alternative bid example (PDF, 232 K) – template for an alternative bid request used in Dakota County, MN
- Industry publications – King County’s Paving Demonstration and market development efforts have been featured in a several industry publications in 2010 and 2011. See “Articles” below
