Waste Reduction and Recycling

  • Southwood Elementary increased its recycling rate from 40 percent to 57 percent.
  • Due to the school’s efforts, the frequency of garbage collection was decreased from every day to three times per week, saving the school $200 each month.  Custodian Dick Lundberg has a goal of reducing the pickups to twice per week.
  • Morning PA announcements were used to promote the school’s waste reduction and recycling efforts.
  • Parent volunteers conducted a plastic bag recycling campaign.
  • Southwood Elementary now recycles milk cartons campus wide.
  • Recycling containers provided by the Green Schools Program were added to each classroom for paper, plastic bottles and aluminum cans.
  • School staff placed recycling stickers on all recycling containers.  Provided by the Green Schools Program, the stickers list what can and can’t be recycled.
