Waste Reduction and Recycling
- Sequoyah Middle School increased its recycling rate by 25 percent to a 33 percent recycling rate in 2009-2010, and to 44 percent in 2010-2011 with a focus on classroom and lunchroom recycling.
- Recycling containers and stickers were set up in the school’s lunchroom.
- Student leadership team members monitor garbage and recycling in the lunchroom on a daily basis.
- Leadership classes tackle environmental projects each quarter and challenge one another to conserve.
- Staff members of the Sequoyah Green Schools Team meet monthly to set goals for waste reduction, recycling, wetlands restoration and energy conservation. They also actively pursue educational opportunities for themselves and for their students, including attending conferences and workshops that will help them to improve conservation practices.
- Leadership classes led a campaign to encourage reuse practices such as using durable water bottles instead of purchasing single-use plastic water bottles. The campaign included sales of durable water bottles decorated with the school logo.
Energy Conservation
- Leadership classes conducted energy surveys, observed energy use in the school office, classrooms and restrooms, and made suggestions for improvement.
- Sequoyah Middle School is involved in the “Rebuild Haiti” project. Students use webcams to communicate with Haitian students, engineers and teaching staff three times a year to help them develop energy-friendly buildings as they rebuild schools.
- School thermostats were tested and adjusted.
- In the Oct.13, 2010 newsletter, students shared information about dressing appropriately for the season.
