Environmental Purchasing
Environmental purchasing means buying products that reduce waste, use less energy, have recycled content, are less toxic, are recyclable or are more durable.
Schools can:
- Establish a written purchasing policy. Such a policy would describe the school's commitment to purchasing recycled-content products whenever practical.
- Purchase recycled-content products
- Copier paper
- Letterhead
- Envelopes
- File folders
- All other paper products
- Pencils
- Desk sets
- Toner cartridges
- Purchase durable products that will last longer, require less maintenance and use less energy
- Furniture
- Office equipment
- Electronic equipment
- Purchase non-toxic products
- Non-toxic cleaners
- Low-volatile organic compound (VOC) paints, adhesives, partitions, carpeting and composite wood products
- Alternatives to hazardous chemicals in laboratory classes
- Non-toxic or less toxic herbicides and pesticides in conjunction with the use of integrated pest management (IPM) to minimize risks to people, property and the environment
