Success Story: Maywood Middle School

School Location: Renton
Began participating in the Green Schools Program: In 2006-07, then again in April 2009

Level one of the Green Schools Program: Achieved in December 2009

Waste Reduction and Recycling

  • Maywood Middle School increased its recycling rate from 24 percent to 62 percent by increasing recycling and by starting to collect food scraps and other compostable materials in its cafeteria. This has resulted in reduced garbage collection costs for the district.
  • In May 2009, with assistance from the City of Issaquah, the school improved lunchroom recycling and began recycling food scraps. Prior to May 2009, 5 percent of the total lunchroom waste was recycled, but now 76 percent of lunchroom “waste” is recycled and composted.
  • The school’s garbage volume decreased from 2,925 gallons per week to 675 gallons per week. Recycling volume increased from 160 gallons per week to 2,040 gallons per week. The weekly recycling volume of 2,040 gallons includes 1,400 gallons of food scraps and other compostable materials.
  • To encourage students to recycle and to compost food scraps, students made posters and shared information during morning intercom announcements and on the school information board at the front of the school.
  • The ASB students created a “Go Green” pledge that students signed committing themselves to recycling and composting at school. These pledges were then posted in the lunchroom to remind students of their commitment.
  • The school is committed to creating a culture of conservation that engages students and staff at all levels with an emphasis on conservation awareness and action as part citizenship learning.

Award

  • 2007 King County Earth Hero at School award: Teacher Megan Atkins received this award for her work with leadership students on developing a recycling program and promoting the program through posters, presentations and announcements.
