Waste Reduction and Recycling
- Liberty High School has a strong school-wide recycling program. In January 2010, with assistance from the City of Issaquah, the school started a lunchroom food scrap recycling program.
- Stickers listing what can and can’t be recycled are on all recycling containers.
- The school reduces paper use by using electronic newsletters and fliers .
- To eliminate paper copies, teachers use electronic “drop boxes” for homework.
- Students started a printer cartridge recycling fundraiser that raised $200 during the 2009-10 school year. Proceeds will be used to buy native plants for campus beautification.
Water Conservation
- Liberty High School is collaborating with Friends of the Cedar River Watershed to deliver its Storm Water Systems Thinking Curriculum. This program will help educate and empower students to take action to help solve storm water pollution challenges.
- Students regularly check for water leaks on the campus.
- Students are participating in the Watershed Report Leadership Team. Student leaders represent their school district and community by researching sustainability trends and reporting results to local decision makers.
- Students are helping to design a rain garden as part of the school’s modernization and sustainability plan.
Litter Reduction / Community Involvement
- Students completed an Adopt-A-Road clean-up for Earth Day. The Earth Day clean-up crew collected approximately 30 bags of garbage.
