Environmental Issues in the Classroom
Addressing environmental issues in the classroom means providing students and staff with opportunities to learn about and consider solutions to environmental problems within the context of the academic setting.
Schools can:
- Integrate environmental issues into the curriculum of one or more classes
- Seek opportunities within the curriculum at all grade levels to address environmental issues.
- Participate in King County's assemblies and workshops on a variety of environmental issues or invite guest speakers from environmental organizations or agencies to make presentations to students.
- Educate students, faculty, and staff on how individual and institutional behavior choices affect resource consumption.
- Use the school building and grounds as an environmental learning tool.
- Use the Green Schools Program goals and activities as an environmental learning tool.
- Increase involvement in the community
- Have students assist other schools in creating an environmental education program.
- Invite environmental experts from the community into the classroom.
- Adopt a written policy regarding community involvement.
- Recognize and develop staff
- Involve staff in professional development and continued learning on environmental issues.
- Offer recognition to staff, teachers, and students for their work on environmental issues.
