Waste Reduction and Recycling
- Interlake High School increased its recycling rate by 39 percent, from 24 percent to 33 percent.
- Containers for recycling are in all classrooms, the cafeteria and offices.
- The City of Bellevue partnered with the Green Schools Program to assist Bellevue schools with recycling.
- The school received a grant to purchase compostable lunch trays for a composting collection trial. The school piloted composted food scraps for one week.
- Lunch waste was weighed to assess the impact of recycling.
- The school held a “Green Week” to promote environmental awareness throughout the school. Promotional methods included morning announcements and the distribution of posters about recycling.
- To reduce paper use, the school instituted a double-sided copy policy and began using email communication as much as possible.
- The Green Schools team at Interlake created a PowerPoint presentation, started an environmental display case and posted a Facebook page to communicate with students about environmental issues and the school’s conservation accomplishments.
General
- Interlake High’s Green Schools team activities also included the following:
- Planted trees and created a garden on campus.
- Participated in a service project for the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust.
- Held a service day and raised money for environmental programs.
