Hazardous Materials Management
Hazardous chemicals and other toxic materials can be found in many areas of a school, including science labs and shop classes, art rooms, nurses' offices, custodial closets and maintenance storage sheds. In order to protect human health and the environment, it is critical for hazardous materials to be properly handled, stored and disposed of. Safer, less toxic materials should be purchased whenever possible. Review the hazardous materials management criteria for ideas and tips on how your school or district can eliminate, reduce and properly manage hazardous materials. There is one set of criteria for schools and another for school districts. Schools and school districts can select hazardous materials management as one of the optional categories in either level two or level three of the King County Green Schools Program. Completing the hazardous materials management criteria will fulfill one of the requirements toward receiving recognition as a level two or level three King County Green School or Green School District.
