Success Story: Eton School

School District: Bellevue
School Location: Bellevue
Began participating in the Green Schools Program: September 2009

Level One of the Green Schools Program: Achieved in May 2010

Waste Reduction and Recycling

  • The school’s Green Team began a school-wide program to collect compostable materials.
  • All classrooms and offices have recycling and composting containers with signs listing what can and can’t be recycled.
  • To conserve paper, staff members canceled unwanted mail subscriptions and switched from paper to electronic newsletters.
  • The school’s recycling rate increased from 16 percent to 30 percent.  Each month two yards of compostable materials and eight yards of recyclable materials are collected.
  • By hosting a lunchtime presentation and sorting game, students trained the school community to sort lunch waste and to take care of the classroom compost bins.
  • Students created posters that were hung at each recycling station.
  • At the Make a Difference Summit at Islandwood outdoor learning center on Bainbridge Island, Eton students made a presentation to other schools in the Puget Sound area about how Eton started its composting collection program.
  • Articles were printed in the school newspaper to promote Eton’s composting program and to encourage families to pack lunches in reusable containers.
  • Eton’s environmental club, Roots and Shoots, started a battery recycling program.

Environmental Education

  • Eton’s schoolyard habitat received National Wildlife Federation Schoolyard Habitat Certification.
  • Roots and Shoots, the school’s environmental club, assembled an Earth Day art show that displayed photographs of nature around the campus.
