Energy Conservation
Energy conservation is the main focus of Level Two of the King County Green Schools Program. After each school or school district completes the Level Two criteria, recognition is awarded. For a description of the program, visit How it Works. Schools can decrease their energy consumption by properly maintaining lighting and heating systems, investing in more energy-efficient systems, and through simple everyday actions such as turning off lights and computers when they are not needed. After salaries, school districts spend the most money on utilities such as electricity and heat. Schools also can reduce their impact on global warming by reducing energy use. Energy consumption includes burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas, which contributes to global climate change. For ideas on how your school or district can decrease energy consumption and teach students about the importance of conserving energy, see the energy conservation criteria checklist. There is one checklist for schools and another for school districts. Criteria and resources
