Energy Conservation

Energy Conservation

Energy consumption includes burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas, which contributes to global climate change. Schools can reduce their impact on global warming by reducing energy consumption. After salaries, school districts spend the most money on utilities such as electricity and heat.

Energy consumption can be reduced by properly maintaining lighting and heating systems, investing in more energy-efficient systems, and through simple actions such as turning off lights and computers when they are not needed.

For ideas and tips on how your school or district can decrease its energy consumption, see the energy conservation actions listed in the energy conservation criteria. There is one set of criteria for schools and another for school districts.

Schools and school districts must complete the energy conservation criteria to be recognized as a level two King County Green School or School District. See how the program works.
