Waste Reduction and Recycling

  • Clark Elementary maintains a 40 percent recycling rate through a school-wide program that includes classroom, office and lunchroom recycling, as well as food scrap recycling in the lunchroom.
  • Students monitor lunchroom recycling, composting and garbage collection containers to ensure proper recycling and waste disposal.
  • Students created a video demonstrating which materials should be recycled and composted. The video was shown in classrooms school-wide.
  • A classroom recycling competition encouraged recycling containers with no garbage contamination. Winning classes made the ‘Green Class of the Week’ list announced each Friday.
  • Waste-Free Wednesdays were promoted. Students generating the least amount of garbage at each lunch table were recognized.
  • The school reduced paper use by 90 percent by switching to electronic newsletters and fliers.
  • The school, along with all schools in the Issaquah School District, eliminated the use of straws during lunch.
