Success Story: Carnation Elementary School

School District: Riverview
School Location: Carnation
Began participating in the Green Schools Program: November 2008

Level one of the Green Schools Program: Achieved in May 2009

Waste Reduction and Recycling

  • Carnation Elementary is recycling 47 percent of its solid waste.
  • Recycling containers provided by the Green Schools Program were added to each classroom for paper, milk cartons, bottles and aluminum cans.
  • School staff placed recycling stickers on all recycling containers.  Provided by the Green Schools Program, the stickers list what can and can’t be recycled.
  • Carnation’s third-grade Green Schools Team helped to eliminate unwanted newspaper subscriptions and mail, created paper reuse trays for each classroom, and educated their schoolmates about waste reduction and recycling.
  • The team created a video that promoted recycling and waste reduction.  The video was watched throughout the school.
  • Students created and distributed colorful posters that included samples of recyclable materials.
  • Students participated in recycling presentations around the community and partnered with local watershed organizations to promote conservation efforts within the Tolt River watershed.
