Local Processing Facilities

Diversion/Recycling Rates for Local C&D Processing Facilities

(Last month reported: July 2009)

Diversion rate information is provided by regional mixed C&D disposal and recycling facilities on a monthly basis and is posted to this Web site. The diversion rate includes the percentage of materials that are either recycled or sent to beneficial use, versus disposal.

For source separated C&D recycling options please visit King County's "What Do I Do With . . . .?" database

Allied Waste Industries (Third and Lander, Black River) and Waste Management Incorporated (Eastmont, Cascade Recycling and Recycling Northwest) are required by contracts with King County to accept all C&D materials and determine which loads are appropriate for diversion versus disposal as solid waste. These facilities calculate their diversion/recycling rates based on the loads of materials they have determined to be acceptable for diversion. Facilities such as CDL Recycle, and Recovery 1 only accept loads that are appropriate for diversion and therefore calculate their diversion rate based on the total amounts of C&D received; these facilities voluntarily self-report their diversion rates.

Contractors and demolition firms can maximize the amount of C&D that is diverted, and qualify their project for LEED or Built Green credits, by adhering to the following steps:

  1. Separate materials which may be diverted from those that will be managed as solid waste. Check with your processing facility beforehand to determine what materials they will accept for diversion.
  2. Confirm when entering the facility that the load will be processed for diversion.
  3. Request documentation from the facility which clearly shows that the load will be processed for diversion (recycling and beneficial use).

This is required for LEED or Built Green credit. A tipping receipt marked "Diversion" or "Recycling" provides documentation that the load was diverted for recycling or beneficial use instead of being disposed of as a waste.

Diversion rates for past months are available.

Diversion rates for recent months which have not yet been posted may be available by contacting the Construction Recycling Program online or by calling Kinley Deller at 206-296-4434. Please be aware that there is usually a 60-day lag time between the end of a given month and when the data for that month is available.

NOTE: King County does not endorse the use of any one facility over any other. Businesses listed on this Web site must comply with all, city, county, state, and/or federal environmental regulations. Failure to comply with any of these may cause a business to be removed from the Web site. Businesses may be removed from this Web site at King County’s sole discretion.
