Recycle More. It’s Easy To Do.

Lighten your Load Garbage Challenge

Is your garbage can a little heavy these days? Could it stand to lose a few pounds? Join King County’s Lighten your Load Garbage Challenge!

Why?

Recycling more and wasting less is good for your budget because you can shrink the size of your garbage can and your garbage bill. Recycling saves energy, fuel and water and is good for our environment and the climate! Recycling means less goes into the landfill, less methane is made from decomposing garbage and fewer raw materials are needed to manufacture the goods we buy!

  • Successful recycling is a family affair, get everyone involved
  • Get enough recycling bins in the kitchen and home office
  • Weigh and record your garbage weight each week
  • Weigh and record (PDF, 188 K) your garbage weight each week.
  • Challenge yourself and set a goal to lose at least 15% of your garbage weight

Get a FREE compostable food scrap recycling bag sample and a recycled plastic spatula for pledging to lose your garbage weight. Lose the garbage weight (lose at least 15% of your garbage weight) and receive a Lighten your Load Garbage Challenge window sticker. PLEDGE to lighten your load of garbage NOW!

Get involved

  • Read about how others have lost their garbage weight. These recycling challenge contestants (PDF, 142 K) reduced their garbage weight by recycling food scraps and food soiled paper in their yard waste cart, they discovered more items that can be recycled and learned about what should not be put in the recycle cart.
