Best Workplaces

Does your business belong on our "Best Workplaces for Recycling" list?

Is your business a “Best Workplace for Recycling and Waste Reduction”? This year local businesses are invited to demonstrate their commitment to waste reduction in addition to recycling. The List will be published in July. Entries must be received by June 30, 2009.

Online Application

To qualify, your company MUST meet these six criteria and at least 10 from the checklists below:

  • Business is located in King County outside the city of Seattle
  • Recycles paper, cardboard, plastic, metal (aluminum cans and tins or other)
  • Recycling bins are located next to desks, printers, fax machines or cashiering areas, next to waste baskets, and scattered throughout common areas.
  • Indoor recycling bins and outdoor dumpsters are large enough, and plentiful enough, to accommodate all accepted recyclables
  • "How to" labels or posters are prominently displayed on or near recycling bins
  • New employees are oriented into the recycling program when hired

Recycling

Bins for paper, plastic, glass and cans are located in break rooms, kitchens and cafeterias

Recycling guidelines are included in new employee orientation materials or employee handbooks

If a hotel, notices are posted reminding guests to recycle in the common guest areas

A recycling coordinator team "champions" the recycling program for staff and keeps people excited about it

Recycling goals are set, progress tracked and staff receives results

Wood pallets and scraps are recycled

Plastic film and wrap are recycled

Styrofoam and other plastic packaging are recycled or reused

Scrap metal is recycled

Office has a "reuse" station for materials such as file folders, envelopes or binders

Trays are placed next to printers and copiers for reusable paper

Used toner cartridges are recycled or refilled

Food scraps or other organic materials are collected for composting

Cooking oil is recycled (restaurants and hotels)

Excess food is donated to a food bank

Employees receive updates on recycling guidelines at least annually

Offers take-back program for customers’ fluorescent bulbs and tubes

Offers take-back program for customers’ plastic bags

Donates, resells or recycles used electronic equipment

Participates in a city, EPA, or other recycling/green business program

Offers recycling and food scrap collection at company meetings and conferences

Recycling successes are shared with staff

Offers recycling program for batteries

Offers recycling program for electronic media (CDs, CD-Rs, DVDs, computer tapes, MP3s, digital cameras, cords, cables, CD cases, etc.)

Has a program to reuse or surplus furniture and other durable items

Has a program for employees to reuse, recycle and/or sell items such as Employee Classifieds

Waste Reduction or other environmental practices

Purchases and uses minimum 30% post-consumer recycled content office products such as stationery, business cards, envelopes, copy and fax paper

Has an established company policy requiring all internal and external documents be printed double-sided

Sends and receives all faxes electronically

Printers and copiers are set to print and copy double-sided pages

Reuses mailing boxes and envelopes

Uses dishware, glassware and flatware in kitchens, cafeterias and hotel guest rooms, instead of single-use paper or plastic products

Does not offer single-use water bottles within company

As a result of increased recycling, have reduced size or collection frequency of garbage dumpster

Encourages customers to re-use shopping bags or use their own bags (offer incentives or sells reusable bags)

Returned or defective merchandise is donated or re-purposed

Accounting department offers paperless billing

Uses reduced packaging, recycled content or compostable packaging for company's products (or food if a restaurant)

Manufacturers or sells products made from recycled materials

Office furnishings are used, recycled or made with recycled materials

This year we are asking applicants to tell us what makes their company a 2009 Best Workplace for Recycling and Waste Reduction. We have found the best sources of successful recycling and waste reduction practices come from the businesses themselves. If your business is a prior winner, tell us about recent changes and improvements. And finally, please provide us with your advice to other businesses.
