Project background and purpose

The King County Solid Waste Division is constructing a new transfer and recycling station at the site of the existing Bow Lake Transfer Station in Tukwila and on adjacent property to the north that was purchased for this project.

The existing transfer station was built in 1977 and replaced a smaller, outdated transfer facility. A landfill operated at the site from the early 1940s until 1961.

In 2005, the Bow Lake station began operating 24 hours a day on weekdays as the facility began to play an enhanced role in the county's solid waste transfer system. The Bow Lake station handles more than a third of the County’s solid waste. Upgrades to the Bow Lake station are necessary for several reasons:

  • To meet current building and environmental standards
  • To improve safety and operational efficiency
  • To accommodate projected future growth in the region
  • To incorporate efficiencies that will help keep disposal rates as low as possible when the County's remaining landfill reaches capacity and solid waste is exported to an out-of-county disposal site.

The first stage in this renovation project was the development of a Facility Master Plan that will provide a guide for the site design and operational improvements to be made to the station. The Facility Master Plan was developed in 2006 and approved by the King County Council in May 2007.
