Cleanup Assistance

The Brownfields Program provided U.S. Environmental Protection Agency funds to remove this underground tank

The Brownfields Program provides technical assistance in assessment and cleanup at no charge.

Assessment Assistance

King County contracts with the Environmental Coalition of South Seattle (ECOSS) (external link) to.

  • research past and present site uses,
  • review existing environmental studies,
  • and make referrals to qualified consultants.

Private individuals and businesses, nonprofit organizations and municipalities are eligible for this assistance.

Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments

King County contracts with an environmental consulting firm to conduct Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments.

King County can also request that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Brownfields Program (external) conduct assessments under their Targeted Brownfields Assessment (TBA) Program (external)

  • Nonprofit organizations and municipalities are eligible for this assistance.  Private individuals and businesses may be eligible if the end use of the site will result in a public benefit.

Assessment grants (external) of $200,000 are available from EPA. The Brownfields Program can help access grant funds by applying to EPA on behalf of projects or assisting others apply directly.

  • Nonprofit organizations and municipalities are eligible for grants. Private individuals and businesses are not eligible for grants.

Cleanup Assistance

King County contracts with the Environmental Coalition of South Seattle (ECOSS) (external) to:

  • provide information on cleanup planning and funding,
  • assist clients navigate state and federal regulatory requirements,
  • make referrals to qualified consultants, and
  • review cleanup plans.
  • Private individuals and businesses, nonprofit organizations and municipalities are eligible for this assistance.

Additional Cleanup Assistance

King County contracts with an environmental consulting firm to conduct Environmental Site Assessments. The consulting firm can also prepare approaches and cost estimates for cleanup once the assessments are complete.

  • Nonprofit organizations and municipalities are eligible for this assistance. Private individuals and businesses may be eligible for this assistance if the end use of the property will result in a public benefit.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Brownfields Program (external) can also prepare approaches and cost estimates for cleanup as part of its Targeted Brownfields Assessments (TBA) Program (external).

  • Nonprofit organizations and municipalities are eligible for this assistance. Private businesses and landowners may be eligible for this assistance if the end use of the property will result in a public benefit.

Cleanup grants (external) of $200,000 are available from EPA. The Brownfields Program can help access grant funds by applying to EPA on behalf of projects or assisting others apply directly.

  • Nonprofit organizations and municipalities are eligible for grants. Private businesses and landowners are not eligible for grants.

The Brownfields Program offers low-interest loans to finance site cleanup activities.

  • Private individuals and businesses, nonprofit organizations and municipalities are eligible for loans and must apply through King County.
