Council adopts priorities for 2010

On Monday April 19, 2010 the County Council unanimously adopted a series of business-like goals which were part of “21st Century Governance” motion.

“The county’s budget woes cannot impact our ability to provide valuable county services,” said Council Vice Chair Jane Hague, a co-sponsor of the legislation. “The 2010 Priorities are a proactive way of addressing the challenges we’re facing. Additionally, it provides our constituents with a way to check our progress.” View the Council’s scorecard.

The adopted priorities include:
• Increasing trust in government: Making County government more transparent, accountable and accessible;
• Providing financial stewardship—Exercising sound financial management in adopting a balanced budget that reflects the values of King County residents and builds the County’s fiscal strength;
• Advancing local and regional cooperation—Working with local governments and community organizations in implementing local and regional priorities and increasing efficiency of service delivery;
• Encouraging jobs and economic development;
• Improving mobility options;
• Fostering safe, healthy and vibrant communities.

BNFS Update

Recently the Committee of the Whole, which I chair, was briefed on the status of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) Eastside Rail Corridor (ERC). In December of 2009 the Council adopted an ordinance that provided the Executive with negotiation authority for additional rights concerning the corridor and confirming a “Regional Process” to determine its specific use. Additionally, the Port of Seattle has worked with King County and other partners including the City of Redmond, Sound Transit, Puget Sound Energy and Cascade Water Alliance, to determine the next phase of ownership. Negotiations for specific property rights are currently underway and funding sources are being explored.

As of now, the Council is looking at several issues including the development of a “regional process” with all five of the county’s partners and addressing “pinch points” that present significant conflicts regarding the ERC’s potential use. As your representative on the Council I’m interested to see how solutions to these potential concerns develop.

I’ll keep you up-to-date as new issues arise.
