Council Passes Motion Declaring Public Employee Appreciation Day in King County
On Monday, March 28, 2011, the King County Council unanimously adopted a motion making the fourth Monday of every March “Public Employee Appreciation Day” in Martin Luther King, Jr. County. Immediately following the vote, the Council presented Dustin Frederick, Co-chair of the King County Labor Coalition, and David Freiboth, Executive Secretary of the Martin Luther King, Jr. County Labor Council, the proclamation declaring the 2011 day. As the primary sponsor of this motion, I wanted to show King County’s appreciation for the work our 13,000 public employees carry out every day of the year and recognition of the sacrifices our employees make to ensure services continue to be delivered in this economic crisis. I will continue to stand with public employees and their unions to ensure they receive the respect they deserve as the County’s most important asset. The best way to show that respect is to stand in support of their collective bargaining rights and the right to organize, as well as ensuring that our employees have a fair, living wage and good benefits.

I would also encourage you to show your support of public employees on April 4, from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m., at a community rally sponsored by the Martin Luther King, Jr. County Labor Council and other labor organizations at Martin Luther King, Jr. Park, 2200 Martin Luther King, Jr. Way, in Seattle. In light of what is beginning to happen to the bargaining rights of public employees in other states, it is important to stand in support of our own dedicated workers. Our county’s namesake, Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4th of 1968 advocating for the rights of African American sanitation workers in Memphis, Tennessee. I hope you will join me on this day and “A Call to Action and Standing up for Working Families!”

King County Council Adopts Operational Strategic Plan
On March 14, 2011, the Council unanimously adopted the King County Council Operational Strategic Plan, 2011-2015 (“Strategic Plan”). Building upon the King County Strategic Plan adopted last year, the Strategic Plan outlines the priorities that will guide the Council for the next five years.
The plan defines the role of the Council in the countywide strategic plan with the vision of the Council working to ensure that all voices are equitably represented in King County. Under the theme of “One County,” regardless of whether we live in a city, an urban unincorporated neighborhood, or rural areas, the Council’s top goals and objectives are:
-
Protect and Enhance the Quality of Life: Establish policies that protect and enhance the economy, environment, health and safety of the people of King County;
-
Financial Stability: Maintain and enhance the financial strength of King County through prudent fiscal management to optimize service delivery to the residents of King County; and
-
Accountability: Maintain and grow the public’s trust in the Council and the County through accessible, effective, responsive, and transparent oversight of County government.
The Strategic Plan calls for the development of performance measures by June 2011 and the electronic reporting of those measurements to begin in the third quarter of 2011. I look forward to hearing your thoughts and comments on the Strategic Plan as well as the performance measures once they are developed. In both the countywide and Council Strategic Plans, we have emphasized the principle of equity and justice. We are interested in your thoughts of what this means to you and your community.
