December 2011
Dear Neighbor:
I hope this e-News finds you well and enjoying the warm company of family and friends during the holiday season. As 2011 draws to a close, the Council has adjourned and entered its annual winter recess.
Instead of my usual e-News, I thought you might enjoy watching a quick video of a recent Ignite style presentation I gave to the Municipal League of King County on “How to Apply the Lessons of Chess to Government.”
“Enlighten us, but make it quick” is the motto of Ignite talks. A 5-minute speech is set to 20 slides that automatically advance every 15 seconds. This fast-paced format is intended to be engaging, thought provoking, and fun.
The Municipal League invited local government leaders to present talks on the topic “Extreme Makeover: Government Edition.” As a two-time Washington state chess champion, I discussed how chess has helped me in my work on the King County Council and how lessons from the game can improve government.
The video is available through the Seattle Channel. My remarks begin at the 8:00 minute mark.
I also want to invite you to save the date for upcoming town hall meetings in the new year. Town hall meetings provide the opportunity to hear directly from you about local and county issues. I hope you can join us!
- Wednesday, February 1, at 7:00 p.m. at Finn Hill Junior High in Kirkland, 8040 NE 132nd Street, with King County Councilmember Jane Hague.
- Thursday, February 2, at 7:00 p.m. at Olympic View Elementary in North Seattle, 504 NE 95th Street, with Seattle City Councilmember Mike O’Brien.
Happy Holidays!

Bob Ferguson
King County Councilmember, District 1
