Capital Improvement Program

Traffic Signals

Program No.: RDCW19

This county program maintains a list of intersections in unincorporated King County that would benefit from further design or are in need of improvement as a result of projected development. These locations are evaluated using federal and state criteria using locally gathered traffic volume and accident data. Locations are then prioritized based on these criteria and pedestrian activity. Consideration is given to the close proximity of parks or schools, as pedestrian traffic is more likely in these areas. The intersections are then surveyed and reviewed to determine the best solution for the roadway and neighborhood. These solutions may include traffic signals, pedestrian signals, actuated flashers, in-pavement crosswalk flashers and other technology. Other solutions may involve physical changes to the roadway, such as roundabouts or turn lanes. All improvements utilize the most modern equipment and techniques to keep motorists and pedestrians safe.
