Metro ‘Driver of the Year’ popular with both peers and passengers

Earlier this year, a passenger wrote King County Metro Transit to suggest that a photo of Porter Mathis III be posted in every bus because of his great skills as a driver. Obviously other Metro drivers agree with that passenger, because they have selected Mathis as the Operator of the Year for 2003 – an honor that is marked with the recipient’s photo being placed inside almost every Metro bus.

Mathis, 52, has been driving for Metro since 1975. He has a 23-year safe driving record, and has garnered more than 75 commendations from customers and supervisors during his career. He was honored for all of his accomplishments today in a ceremony at Metro’s South Base in Tukwila. It is the 26th year for the annual transit recognition.

"Porter Mathis joins a very select group of transit operators whose careers reflect many years of driving excellence and professional pride," said King County Executive Ron Sims. "In his case, we salute him not only for having an outstanding record in safety and attendance, but also for having a big heart and gentle soul."

Mathis’ caring and compassionate nature was mentioned repeatedly during today’s ceremony. Bus passengers note how patient he is, often waiting for those running for the bus and taking extra time to help people with disabilities.

His supervisors noted that Mathis has helped train other drivers on the appropriate protocols of assisting people with disabilities. And, his co-workers say that Mathis has always been proud to be an employee of King County Metro Transit.

"Porter is always glad to answer questions to help riders get where they need to go in a timely manner," said South Base Supervisor Bruce Porad. "He sees his job as one of providing information, safe passage and giving respect to everyone along the way."

His caring attitude also carries over to his off-the-job activities. According to his wife Denise, Mathis underwent training to become a deacon at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church. In his church work, he serves as a resource person for individuals and families who are recovering from addictions – helping them cope and deal with the negative impacts of substance abuse. Denise Mathis said during his early years in the church, he became known as the "weeping deacon" because of his tender heart.

Mathis has lived in King County since he was 18 months old. He is a graduate of Garfield High School, where he was a standout athlete in football and baseball. He and his wife have three children and live in Auburn, where he loves to garden and prepare gourmet meals.

He currently drives Metro routes 168 (serving Kent and the Kent East Hill area) and 190 (Seattle to Star Lake). Here are a few comments from his customers:

"I like Porter because he smiles, is friendly to strangers, and helps people out when they can’t find their bus passes."

"He’s always in a good mood, and told me that he won’t let himself have a bad day – no matter how it starts out. It is amazing how refreshing it can be to speak with a genuinely happy person when your day is going badly."

"This driver seems to really enjoy his job and it shows in his demeanor. I judge other drivers by him."

"His customer service is unsurpassed. He is Driver of the Year material."

"These comments from customers sum up what a great representative Porter is for our agency," said Metro General Manager Kevin Desmond. "His dedication to his passengers is a model for all our operators."

Metro employs more than 2,500 bus operators who do all they can to help riders reach their destinations safely and efficiently. Since 1978, the drivers themselves have selected the best of their peers to hold the title of Metro Transit’s Operator of the Year.

The award honors operators who demonstrate safe driving skills, exceptional customer service, and an outstanding overall work record. In order to receive the award, a driver must be chosen as Operator of the Month from one of the seven transit bases. At the end of the year, the Operator of the Year is selected by a vote of all fellow Operators of the Month.
