King County ready for more snow

The King County Department of Transportation is keeping road crews on 12-hour shifts in anticipation of more snow, at least through tonight. Temperatures are expected to drop below freezing again tonight and snow showers are forecast through the weekend. Drivers can expect icy and in some places slushy road conditions, especially after sundown and in the early morning hours.

Road conditions steadily improved today as temperatures warmed and rain washed away snow and ice. There were no road closures due to snow. Traffic is expected to be lighter than normal during commutes again tonight and Friday, however drivers are advised to watch out for ice throughout the holiday weekend. King County road crews give first priority to major arterials, Metro Transit and school bus routes, emergency routes, freeway on ramps and access to Park and Ride lots.

King County Metro Transit will be on a holiday schedule on New Years day. Whenever snow falls, it’s possible some bus routes will be assigned snow and adverse weather reroutes to avoid major hills and slick areas. Passengers with questions can call Metro's rider information number, 206-553-3000 (voice) or (206)-684-1739 (TTY). Metro staff can tell you about reroutes, however it is possible service will be unexpectedly rerouted due to fast changing conditions.

Please check your Timetable or Metro Online for areas along its route that your bus is likely to avoid if streets are slick. Wait for buses at posted bus stops along flat arterials, or at major transfer points such as Park and Ride lots and Transit Centers. Use your route’s normal schedule, and be prepared for possible delays. Metro encourages passengers to be aware of travel conditions in their vicinity, listen often to media reports for the Puget Sound area, plan ahead, and check Metro Online's Adverse Weather page at: http://transit.metrokc.gov/tops/bus/snow.html for complete information.

Residents should monitor King County Road Alerts and regional alerts issued by the Regional Public Information Network at www.GOVLINK.org for any road closure announcements. The Web site also provides a sign up form for people wanting to receive alerts on their e-mail and pagers. King County also provides updated information on its Website at www.metrokc.gov.
