Road, bridge closure scheduled for Carnation area

Starting the week of Aug. 25, the King County Road Services Division will begin two projects that will affect traffic in areas west of Carnation.

A culvert replacement project on West Snoqualmie Valley Road Northeast will close that roadway between Ames Lake-Carnation Road and Northeast 80th Street for four weeks. The road is expected to reopen on Monday, Sept. 22.

And, the Tolt Bridge will be closed for two days – Monday, Aug. 25 and Tuesday, Aug. 26 – during daytime hours only for an under-bridge inspection.

On West Snoqualmie Valley Road, crews will be replacing a damaged culvert conveying Ames Creek under the roadway. As part of the division’s Fish and Habitat Restoration Program, the existing five-foot diameter metal pipe will be replaced with a 12-foot wide by eight-foot deep concrete box culvert. The new culvert will provide improved passage for adult and juvenile fish in the system.

Deep excavation for the project will require West Snoqualmie Valley Road to be closed to traffic for four weeks. Once the exact start of the closure is known, information will be posted on the King County Alert! webpage.  During the closure, traffic will be re-routed via Ames Lake-Carnation Road and Northeast 80th Street.

Next week’s inspection is a routine, federally mandated, safety inspection of the existing Tolt Bridge. The county plans to replace and realign the 81-year-old Tolt Bridge. According to the current schedule, construction would begin in 2004.

The posted detour will be via State Route 202 to Fall City and then to Carnation on State Route 203; but several other local routes are also available.
