Culvert failure accelerates road project

The King County Road Services Division is accelerating a road project on Southeast 248th Street east of Lake Wilderness, after a portion of the roadway collapsed Thursday night.

Starting Monday, June 9 at 9 a.m., the street will be closed for approximately 250 feet where it crosses under the Cedar River Trail west of 244thth Place Southeast. The closure is expected to last through August 20. A temporary steel plate has been put in place to cover the hole in the road over the weekend of June 7 and 8.

This project was originally scheduled to start later this month, but the culvert failure necessitated an emergency road closure. The county is replacing the wooden trestle on which the Cedar River Trail crosses 248th Street and Rock Creek. The project also includes replacement of the 100-year-old, wooden culvert that crosses underneath the roadway. The new culvert will be larger to allow for better fish passage on Rock Creek.

The suggested detour follows Southeast 244th Street, State Route 169, State Route 516/Kent-Kangley Road, and Southeast Summit Landsburg Road to Southeast 248th Street. A detour map and information about the project is available online.
