Metro Transit bus service on University Way in Seattle will be relocated one
block east starting Monday, June 24 to accommodate a City of Seattle project
that will rebuild the main street of the University District’s commercial area.
The rerouting could be in effect for 12 to 14 months.
Buses serving Routes 71, 72, 73, 74, 78 and 83 will stop on 15th Avenue
Northeast instead of University Way. This reroute is in affect between
Northeast Campus Parkway and Cowen Place Northeast, with a few exceptions. Bus
passengers should check Metro Online
at for the most up-to-date information for their route.
Better known as "The Ave," the city is about to begin transforming
University Way Northeast. The street will be rebuilt from Northeast 41st Street
to Northeast 50th Street. Improvements include sidewalks, lighting, traffic
signals, landscaping, transit upgrades and other urban design features. The
goal is to enhance safety, add pedestrian and transit improvements, and make
the area more inviting for customers of businesses located along The Ave.
The project will be completed in phases beginning at NE 41st Street and
expanding north. But, transit service will not resume operations on University
Way until the project is complete sometime during the summer of 2003.
