Metro Transit prepared for snow Friday morning

King County Metro Transit is chaining up buses in preparation of a predicted snowfall by Friday morning.

Metro crews were put on alert Thursday night to chain up the fleet for the morning commute.

If the snowfall is heavy or widespread, Metro could be rerouting service -- or operating chained shuttles -- on some bus routes to bypass hazardous, hilly streets. That is why it is important for riders to wait for buses at the very top or very bottom of hills, because the coaches are often unable to make passenger stops located on inclines. Also, it is best to wait at a bus stop on a main arterial, a transit center, park-and-ride lot or major transfer point.

Snow reroute information is available in timetables with the snowflake symbol on the front. Those timetables are also available online at http://transit.metrokc.gov or by calling Metro's rider information line, (206) 553-3000 (voice) or (206) 684-1739 (TTY). There will be a high volume of calls, so expect the phone lines to be very busy.

Many buses may also be running late because of weather-related traffic backups throughout the region. Passengers are advised to dress warmly and be patient.

The latest information on weather, road conditions and emergency situations is available from 38 jurisdictions and agencies at the Regional Public Information Network (RPIN) Web site at http://www.govlink.org. RPIN also offers alerts via e-mail and pager on the latest weather, roads and emergency news. Visit the RPIN Web site to subscribe to e-NEWS.

King County Metro Transit is running a regular schedule on most of its routes Monday morning. A few routes in the south Seattle area are being rerouted to avoid icy roads.

In these areas, Metro is operating on a snow reroute -- or running chained shuttles -- to bypass hazardous, hilly streets. Snow reroute information is available in timetables with the snowflake symbol on the front. Those timetables are also available on Metro Online.

Some buses may also be running late because of weather-related traffic delays throughout the region. Bus riders should allow for ample time to reach their destinations.
