King County International Airport to discuss
noise study recommendations at open house

The King County International Airport (Boeing Field) will hold a public open house to discuss the results of its Noise Remedy Study on Tuesday, March 12, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Airport Terminal Building Conference Center Lobby, 7299 Perimeter Road, Seattle. Visit the Airport's Web site to download the 13-page, 80 KB Word document.

After two-and-a-half years of deliberations from the Study Advisory Committee (SAC), three rounds of community meetings and open houses, the airport has developed a set of 11 recommendations to mitigate airport noise on and around the airport. The proposal includes recommendations that range from maintaining existing programs to those that will require additional study. As a result, some programs can be implemented immediately while others may take several years to see results. The proposal also includes the unprecedented recommendation to alleviate noise in communities impacted by a combination of both King County and Sea-Tac airports.

At the open house, the public will be able to review the proposal and identify how the recommendations will affect their neighborhoods prior to the public hearing. Project team members and experts on sound insulation and sales assistance will also be available to answer questions and talk informally with the public.

The King County Council will review the final proposal and hold a public hearing on March 18 at 1:30 p.m. to give the public an opportunity to comment on the proposal. The hearing will be held in the courthouse Council Chambers, Room 1001, 516 Third Ave., Seattle. Comments may also be mailed or faxed to the County Council prior to the hearing at 516 Third Ave., #1200, Seattle, WA 98104; fax: (206) 296-0198. Once adopted, the proposal will be submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration for approval and funding. This process can take from six months to a year.

The complete proposal, the SAC recommendations report, summaries of the SAC deliberations, and the consultant's recommendations and technical material can be reviewed at local libraries and on the King County International Airport Web site, as well as at the open house.

The study has been conducted under Part 150 of the Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR). The airport initiated the FAR Part 150 Noise and Land Use Compatibility Study in June 1999 to identify potential solutions to address noise impacts from airport activities.

For more information about the project or directions to the airport, visit the King County International Airport Web site or call Marnie McGrath at (206) 205-8358. For assistance with translation services or other special needs, please call (206) 296-7457 by March 7, 2002.
