Linda Dougherty appointed manager of King County Road Services Division

The King County Department of Transportation has announced that Linda Dougherty has been named manager of the department's 600-member Road Services Division. The division, which is one of the largest road agencies in the state, has a combined annual operating and capital budget of $160 million and is responsible for about 2,000 miles of roadway in unincorporated King County.

"Linda's outgoing and enthusiastic approach toward team building and problem solving will be an important asset for this department as it works to deliver meaningful traffic relief," Department of Transportation Director Paul Toliver said. "Her experienced leadership in the Road Services Division will also be a key benefit as we look at ways to combine our roads and transit expertise to find better ways of moving people throughout King County."

Prior to being named manager, Dougherty served as both acting and assistant manager of the Road Services Division. Before joining the division in 1995, she was manager of King County Parks and Open Space. Dougherty is a resident of Des Moines.

Since joining the Road Services Division, Dougherty has been particularly instrumental in launching King County's nationally recognized Neighborhood Enhancement Program that directly involves residents in identifying traffic and pedestrian safety improvements -- especially in older urban areas of the county.

She has also implemented changes within the division to create a more collaborative work environment and has served as an advocate to identify creative and cost-effective ways to deliver road improvements that respect neighborhood character and quality of life. Dougherty has additionally played a critical role in developing innovative funding strategies that have allowed the county to accelerate road building.

Looking ahead, Dougherty thinks a broader regional perspective will be crucial in solving our transportation problems.

"Given the magnitude of our needs, a leading priority for my division will be to emphasize partnerships that help solve some of our most pressing road problems," Dougherty said. "By working collaboratively with other jurisdictions, we have an opportunity to make meaningful improvements to key arterial corridors throughout the county and to use every tool we have, from signal synchronization to use of emerging technology to keep traffic moving."

Besides overseeing the road network in unincorporated King County, the Road Services Division provides comprehensive services to 11 suburban cities through contracts and maintains 223 bridges throughout the county.
