Metro to continue reroutes around Alaskan Way Viaduct

Although the Washington State Department of Transportation has partially reopened the Alaskan Way Viaduct, Metro Transit will continue its surface street reroutes until further notice.

In keeping with temporary weight limits established by WSDOT, Metro will continue to reroute buses on to surface streets until it is determined the bridge can accommodate oversized loads. With the following exceptions, passengers will not miss any regular bus stops either in downtown Seattle or along other parts of their routes.

All buses that normally exit the northbound Viaduct at Seneca Street will miss their northbound 1st Avenue stops at Union or Pine. (Eastbound Pike Street at 2nd Avenue is already closed for construction.)

Buses that normally make stops in either direction along East Marginal Way will miss those stops at South Idaho, Diagonal, Alaska and Hudson Streets. There are temporary stops posted on the reroute in both directions on South Hudson Street at East Marginal Way. Passengers are reminded that these buses may experience delays.

The following routes are directly affected: 20, 21 Express, 37 Express southbound only, 54, 55, 56 Express, 113, 130 Express, 132 Express, 135, 137 Express southbound only, and the 950 Custom Bus.

The restriction of viaduct traffic adjacent to the downtown area may cause surface streets to be more congested than normal. All transit service in this corridor may be delayed as a result. Additionally, the schedules of other bus routes in Metro's service area could be affected by congestion in the south end.

For specific route information, see Metro Online.

Using transit or other transportation alternatives instead of driving alone will help reduce traffic-related delays. Metro has recently introduced an online ridematching system at www.rideshareonline.com, which may be a good alternative for many commuters.
