Lower weight limits to be enforced on Elliott Bridge east of Renton
A recent inspection revealed deterioration to the bottom
beam of one of the steel trusses that support the bridge. King County hopes to
start repairs on the Elliott Bridge early next week, pending approval from permitting
agencies. The repairs could take up to two weeks to complete. Signs announcing
the weight restriction will go up Thursday morning. During the period of the repairs, a maximum gross vehicle
weight of 10,000 pounds, or 5 tons, will be posted. In essence, only passenger
cars and light trucks will be allowed to cross the bridge during this time. Due
to the significant nature of this restriction, enforcement will be necessary to
achieve compliance with the weight limit. Previous weight limits ranged from 19 to 23 tons depending on the type of truck. After repairs are complete, these limits will be lowered to 13 to 16 tons. Trucks exceeding those limits will have to drive 6½ miles around the bridge on the Jones Road and Highway 169. About 14,000 vehicles of all kinds now use the Elliott Bridge per day. ### |
