Snow and ice cause some King County closures

putting chains on busesSeveral King County government offices are adjusting operating hours in response to snow, ice and difficult road conditions. Conditions can changes overnight, please check back for the latest updates. Stay safe and check Metro bus and road conditions.

Public Health – Seattle & King County: Wednesday morning, all Public Health operations, including those in Chinook, the King County Administration Building and at Harborview Medical Center are currently scheduled to re-open at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Depending on the conditions, some sites may open even later. Please check the Public Health website for updates. Public Health will continue to maintain appropriate staffing levels for critical and ongoing functions, such as Jail Health, King County Medic One, the King County Medical Examiner's Office, as well as key functions during regular business hours.

Department of Development and Environmental Services: The main office at the Black River site in Renton (900 Oakesdale Ave. S.W.) is open. The Permit Center, Phone Center, Records Center and Cashier are operating on normal hours today. For more information visit the department's home page .

Sheriff's Office: Open regular business hours today, except the Kenmore Precinct, which will close at 10 a.m. due to heavy snow conditions.

Superior Court: Open regular business hours today.

District Court: To close today at 3 p.m.

King County Transit: Due to still-icy streets in many areas and the possibility of more snow overnight, King County Metro Transit will be operating approximately half of its regular weekday service on Wednesday, Dec. 24.  Reduced service is expected to continue through at least the end of the week, since Metro had already planned to operate a Sunday schedule on Christmas Day and a “partial holiday” schedule on Friday, Dec. 26. Schedules for those two days may be adjusted, if the weather and driving conditions don’t improve.

Paratransit ACCESS: On life sustaining medical only today. On Christmas Day, ACCESS will provide service until 5 pm; after 5pm it will go back to life sustaining medical only. Friday's service level is uncertain and will depend on weather and road conditions. Service level will be determined tomorrow.

Department of Community and Human Services:Offices to close at 4 p.m. The 24/7 Emergency Services Patrol and Crisis and Commitment Services are operating.

Solid Waste: All transfer stations will close at 4 p.m. today due to inclement weather. All King County solid waste facilities will close on Christmas Day and, weather permitting, will resume regular operating hours on Saturday, Dec. 26. Before heading out on the road, please check the Solid Waste Division transfer station Web site at for updated information on hours and closures.

Parks: The King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way and Evergreen Pool in North Highline are closed until Monday, Dec. 29. The teen center at Steve Cox Memorial Park in White Center is closed until Jan. 6. Generally, King County parks remain open to public use, but visitors should know that parking is very limited or unavailable due to heavy snow.

King County Animal Care and Control: The Bellevue (Crossroads) and Kent shelters will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday December 24th. Officers’ response availability for animal-related calls out in the field is still limited by weather and road conditions. Residents should only call the Animal Care and Control Call Center (206-296-PETS) if they have a priority call: ones defined as a person or animal being attacked or severely bitten by an animal, an injured animal, or calls about animals being left outside exposed to the elements and without protection, fresh water and food.

Community Service Centers: The Licensing Office at the Regional Justice Center in Kent will be open Wednesday, December 24, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., for marriage licenses and passport services, and the downtown Seattle office is open from 8:30 to 4:30 for marriage licenses. However, weather conditions may change this schedule. Please call ahead to confirm they will be open when you plan to visit: 206-205-7330 in Kent. The downtown number is 206-296-4021. The Covington Community Service Center will not be open on Wednesday, December 24, due to road and weather conditions. The Cottage Lake Community Service Center is open today.
