Patricia Bracelin Steel Memorial Building grand opening set for Monday, June 21

A grand opening ceremony for the King County and Harborview Medical Center Patricia Bracelin Steel Memorial Building will be held at noon this Monday, June 21, 2004.

The building, located at 401 Broadway on Seattle’s First Hill, is named after Patricia Bracelin Steel. Steel served the citizens of King County in a wide range of positions that spanned nearly 30 years, earning the respect and admiration of employees and elected officials in all three branches of King County government. Steel was born and raised in Seattle and educated at the University of Washington. While still in service to King County, she passed away on July 7, 2002.

Steel was closely involved in the beginning stages of this project, which was constructed using a build-to-suit, lease-to-own delivery method combined with 63-20 tax exempt bond financing.

The developer/contractor of the five story, 158,000-square-foot building, is Opus Northwest. King County is the lessee of the building for the actual user, Harborview Medical Center. The building is critically needed to meet both office and clinic requirements.

“This project is an outstanding example of a public-private partnership in which the parties have worked in concert to create and provide essential office and clinical space for Harborview Medical Center,” said Harborview Executive Director David Jaffe. “The new facility will benefit patient care by providing the clinics and administrative offices critically needed new space, while still being easily accessible to the medical center.”

"It is a fitting tribute to name this building in Pat Steel’s honor,” said King County Executive Ron Sims. “It is particularly appropriate in view of the uses of the building and Pat's professional interests and lifelong commitments."
