County Executive Sims to announce decision for location of Brightwater wastewater treatment facilities
A major announcement will be made by King County Executive Ron Sims for locations of the Brightwater wastewater
treatment facilities serving south Snohomish County and north King County:
Monday, Dec. 1, 2003
10:30 a.m.
Bear Creek Grange
22729 State Route 9 at Southeast 228th Street
Photo opportunity: The announcement will include the unveiling of a large scale model of the preliminary design of the treatment plant site and other activities to help the news media visualize and depict the location.
Other scheduled speakers: Snohomish County Executive Bob Drewel; Mike Sells, secretary-treasurer of the Snohomish County
Labor Council; Deborah Knutson, president of the Snohomish County Economic Development Council; David Toyer, Master Builders of King and Snohomish Counties; and Jim Ellis, leader of the voter initiative to clean up Lake Washington by creating Metro, which merged with King County in 1994. Other elected and community leaders will be at the announcement.
King County’s Wastewater Treatment Division has been preventing water pollution for nearly 40 years by operating two regional plants in Seattle and Renton and serving more than 1.4 million customers. Those plants are nearing capacity, however, so the new Brightwater plant must be operating by 2010 to protect public health and water quality. After four years of extensive study and public comment. King County released the final environmental impact statement for Brightwater on Nov. 19 that included more than 5,000 formal comments from 550 people, tribes and government agencies.
Directions to the site:
- From downtown Seattle, go north on I-5.
- Take Exit 168B to SR-520 eastbound toward Bellevue/Kirkland.
- Merge onto I-405 northbound toward Everett.
- Take Exit 23 to SR-522 eastbound toward Monroe/Wenatchee.

The wastewater treatment utility operated by King County protects public health and water quality by serving 18 cities, 15 sewer districts in King, Snohomish and Pierce counties.
