Fire Protection District No. 10- Proposition No. 1

BALLOT TITLE
PROPOSITION NO. 1
GENERAL OBLIGATION BONDS
$5,590,000

Shall Fire Protection District No. 10 borrow $5,590,000 to acquire property, construct and remodel fire stations and acquire equipment and emergency medical and fire fighting apparatus by selling general obligation bonds therefor maturing within ten years and levy annual excess property taxes necessary to pay and retire the bonds, as provided in Resolution No. 98-02?

EXPLANATORY STATEMENT:
It is the intent of King County Fire Protection District No. 10 to expend the net proceeds of its proposed $5,590,000 issue of General Obligation Bonds to maintain and improve fire fighting and emergency medical services by acquiring property for future fire stations, constructing and remodeling fire stations and acquiring emergency medical and fire fighting apparatus. These bond proceeds have been designated for use in the following communities as set forth below and in the resolution calling the election.
Sammamish Plateau $ 2,100,000
Greater Issaquah/Coalfield/Tiger Mountain $ 1,645,000
Carnation $ 990,000
Preston $ 745,000

If approved, no taxes will be levied to pay the bonds until they are issued. Generally, homeowners who are 61 years of age or older, or disabled, may be exempted from taxes to pay the bonds if they meet certain income requirements under state law and apply to the County Assessor.

STATEMENT FOR
Since 1990, the population of the Fire District has increased 35%, while the calls for assistance have increased 68%. The Fire District's current average response time to fire and medical calls is 8 minutes. The increases in population and call volume make it necessary to improve existing facilities and add equipment to meet the demand and to maintain rapid response times. The District has not sought a voter approved bond since 1980.
