Statement:
Northshore has a reputation of educational excellence, benefiting our children, property values, and community pride; however, the current school board’s lack of direction, evident in recent budget cuts, threatens the academic quality in our classrooms.
Now is the time for strong leadership that will make the tough decisions needed to raise the quality of education for our students. With broad education experience and strong ties to the community, I will work with parents, administrators, legislators, educators, and fellow board members to explore innovative solutions and make sound decisions to advance the district’s academic level.
Experience: Preschool - High School classrooms (various countries, states, and districts) including: alternative education, Montessori, youth detention, assessment preparation; and English language learners. Service: PTA as President and Legislative Chair; youth athletics, and Boy Scout leadership.

Statement:
My immigrant Asian parents sent 7 children to MIT and Stanford from Renton. I ran for WA State Superintendent of Instruction and LWSD school board, and told OSPI of problems to fix CBA and WASL assessments and math standards before they decided to dump WASL math. “Where is the math?” when our math books ask for areas of circles while how to find the answer (pi-r-squared) has been left OUT OF THE BOOK? The school board should stand up for parents, not dismiss their pleas. They’ve stood by as even more tests, homework and graduation projects are piled on kids. I’m a high-tech MIT-grad engineer and columnist on education and diversity. I perform in the Everett Symphony, and church worship. I’ve taught programming in colleges, and helped out youth in scouts and orchestra. Please help make our schools accountable to parents and students. See www.arthurhu.com/elect.htm

Statement:
Some of my Guiding Principles: Maintain personal responsibility and accountability for our actions, and the consequences. Be self-reliant, and able to help others. Most good things in life come by hard work and perseverance. Always avoid debt, especially for “toys.” My definition of morality is doing and saying those things that help you and others reach their full potential. Concentrate on fundamentals: reading, writing, and arithmetic as well as history, the arts, and science. Encourage parents to teach those things which belong in the home. Parents raise children, not the “State”; let teachers focus on teaching academics. The school environment should be safe and clean both mentally and physically. Curriculum should be age appropriate and rated G, PG, or edited. Always use clean language, be courteous, and show respect for yourself and others. John Adams encouraged laudable ambition, the courage to excel. We should do the same.

Statement:
I have been honored to serve the students and families of Northshore as a School Board member for the past four years, working in the best interests of all students. I understand the complexities of public education and want to maintain our high-quality instructional program.
I have lived in the Northshore School District for nearly 30 years and have been an involved parent and PTA volunteer for 17 years. I have been a substitute teacher, as well as a volunteer in schools and on school-district committees. I served as PTSA president for five years and was PTA Northshore Council President for two years.
I am a member of the boards of two successful businesses, and I apply this business experience to school district operations. We avoided teacher layoffs this year because we listened to our community and protected the classroom.
Re-elect Sue Buske to the Northshore School Board. Thank you.
