First poll returns posted; updates scheduled through early morning

King County Elections posted results for 144,600 absentee ballots earlier this evening, representing mail ballots received through yesterday's mail. The first poll returns of the evening were posted at 10:30 p.m. with scheduled updates expected until approximately 2 a.m.

Today's mail brought in an additional 65,500 voted absentee ballots, the second highest Election Day mail ballot returns since 2004, an indication that voters may have taken their time voting their ballot. King County Elections expects to receive a large number of absentee ballot returns in the next few days.

"Our staff, including the 300 temporary workers who process absentee ballots and more than 3,600 poll workers, did excellent work in this election and it shows," said Sherril Huff, director of King County Records, Elections, and Licensing Services Division.

Huff's visit this morning of three polling places in north Seattle indicated a higher turnout at the polls than was experienced in the August primary a few months ago, though ultimately poll voter turnout will not be known for several hours. A large number of people visiting the polls were voters dropping off their voted absentee ballots.
