Candidate filing week continues;
many offices still vacant
Tomorrow marks the end to this year’s candidate filing week, a period that occurred earlier than in years past as a result of the August 21 primary.
“We have received over 300 filings to date, a number that is considerably lower than normal at this point in candidate filing,” said Sherril Huff, Director Designee of Records, Elections and Licensing Services Division. “In fact, there are 50 positions that have yet to have a candidate file.”
To appear on the fall ballot, all candidates must file a declaration of candidacy online by 4 p.m., in person or by mail no later than 4:30 p.m. Friday, June 8. Mail-in filings must include a notarized declaration of candidacy with the appropriate filing fee and must be in the hands of King County Election officials by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 8.
Online filing is available 24 hours a day at http://www.kingcounty.gov/elections and is as secure as submitting the materials through the mail or in-person. No credit card numbers will be stored and all payment information is encrypted with Secure Sockets Layer certificates (SSL), a protocol for transmitting data securely over the internet.
Please note: Late applications will not be accepted.
Minor party and independent candidates who have met the petition requirements must also file for office next week but their names will not appear on the primary ballot -- only on the General Election ballot in November. Minor party and independent candidates who did not meet the convention requirements may be a write-in candidate for the General Election.
A lot drawing will be conducted on Friday, June 8 at approximately 5 p.m. to determine the order of appearance on the ballot. The public is invited to the drawing, which will be held at King County Elections headquarters located at 500 Fourth Ave, Room 553 in Seattle.
