Officials prepared for active candidate filing week
New August 21 primary
Monday officially kicks off the fall election season, and election officials expect hundreds of candidates will opt to file for office online. With more than 315 county and local offices on the ballot this year, King County expects a lot of activity as candidates gear up their campaigns.
To appear on the fall ballot, all candidates must file a declaration of candidacy online, in person or by mail no later than 4:30 p.m. Friday, June 8. Mail-in filings must include a notarized declaration of candidacy with the appropriate filing fee and must be in the hands of King County Election officials by 4:30 p.m. on Friday, June 8.
Online filing is available 24 hours a day starting Monday, June 4 at 9 a.m. and is as secure as submitting the materials through the mail or in-person. No credit card numbers will be stored and all payment information is encrypted with Secure Sockets Layer certificates (SSL), a protocol for transmitting data securely over the internet.
Please note: Late applications will not be accepted.
Offices in odd-year elections that file with King County include:
- King County Prosecuting Attorney
- King County Assessor
- King County Council Districts (Positions 2,4,6 and 8)
- Port of Seattle (Positions 2 and 5)
- Seattle City Council (Positions 1,3,5,7, and 9)
- Dozens of city, school, fire, water, sewer and park district races
Minor party and independent candidates who have met the petition requirements must also file for office next week but their names will not appear on the primary ballot -- only on the General Election ballot in November. Minor party and independent candidates who did not meet the convention requirements may be a write-in candidate for the General Election.
